Acquiring property as a foreign national – exemptions from the obligation to obtain authorisation (nationals of EU Member States)
When acquiring ownership or joint ownership of properties, nationals of a country that is a Member State of the European Union(EU) or a contracting party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) are equated with Austrian nationals. Official authorisation is thus not required. In principle, an authorisation procedure need only be carried out for nationals of third countries. Due to bilateral agreements, however, nationals of some third countries may also purchase property without needing to complete an authorisation procedure.
