Eligibility to stand as a candidate in elections to the European Parliament
All persons entitled to vote who meet the following conditions are eligible to stand as an Austrian candidate in elections to the European Parliament:
- those who have Austrian citizenship,
- have reached the age of 18 by the day of the election,
- have not been convicted by final and binding judgment of a domestic court in respect of one or more judicially punishable premeditated offences,
- to a term of imprisonment not conditionally suspended for more than six months,
- to a conditionally suspended custodial sentence of more than one year, or
- to a term of imprisonment exceeding six months (even if conditionally suspended), provided that this conviction was also or exclusively based on sections 304 to 307b StGB,
- and are listed in the European electoral register on the due date election
and all persons entitled to vote:
- who are EU citizens whose main residence is located in Austria,
- have reached the age of 18 by the day of the election,
- have not lost their right to be elected in their Member State of origin.
- have not been convicted by final and binding judgment of a domestic court in respect of one or more judicially punishable premeditated offences
- to a term of imprisonment not conditionally suspended for more than six months,
- to a conditionally suspended custodial sentence of more than one year, or
- to a term of imprisonment exceeding six months (even if conditionally suspended), provided that this conviction was also or exclusively based on sections 304 to 307b StGB,
- are listed in the European electoral registe rof an Austrian municipality on the due date election
In order to stand as a candidate for elections to the European Parliament, you must have submitted a nomination to the Federal Electoral Board. That nomination must either be signed by at least three members of the national parliament or by an Austrian Member of the European Parliament or must contain 2 600 supporting declarations made by citizens who are eligible to vote in elections to the European Parliament. Each party participating in the election must submit its nomination to the Federal Electoral Board at the latest by 17.00 on the 44th day before the day of the election.
