General information
The use of studded tyres is banned in the summer months of June, July, August and September only.
A standard studded tyre sticker (Spikeaufkleber)must be displayed prominently at the rear of the vehicle. You can get this sticker from automobile clubs (such as the ÖAMTC and ARBÖ).
Using studded tyres
Studded tyres must only be used on motor vehicles with a maximum permitted total (laden) weight of up to 3,500 kg. If a vehicle with studded tyres is used to tow another vehicle, the trailer/vehicle being towed must be fitted with studded tyres if the maximum weight per axle is 1,800 kg or less.
Studded tyres must be fitted to all the wheels that put the vehicle's power down onto the road. It is important to ensure that the steel studs on the tyres do not protrude by more than 2.0 mm beyond the running surface of the tyres and are securely attached to the tyres. Otherwise, the studs can damage the road surface and pose a risk to other road users.
Advice
Studded tyres must not be used on motorcycles.
Speed limits for motor vehicles fitted with studded tyres
Different speed limits apply to vehicles with studded tyres. The maximum speed limit is 100 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on other roads outside built-up areas.
Using studded tyres elsewhere in Europe
Be aware that studded tyres are banned in some European countries.
