Multi-phase training – what happens if you miss a deadline

Caution

In general, these rules also apply to EU citizens in Austria.

New drivers who do not complete all the prescribed multi-phase training modules (on-road skill refinement session(s) and road safety training) within twelve (category B) or 14 months (categories A1, A2 or A) after obtaining a licence will receive a reminder letter and will be granted a four-month grace period.

If they do not complete the training by the end of the four months, their probationary period will be extended by one year and they will be granted a further four-month grace period.

If they fail to complete the missing modules by the end of the second grace period, their licence will be withdrawn until they provide evidence of having completed those modules.

In certain cases (e.g. serious illness, pregnancy), where suitable evidence is provided, the authority may refrain from withdrawing a person’s licence for an appropriate period of time.
