Some passport authorities also offer the option of making an appointment (online, by telephone or by e-mail). Some passport authorities require you to make an appointment in any case. You can find more information directly on the respective authority website.
If your passport is stolen in Austria
If your passport is stolen in Austria, you must report the theft without delay to the local police (→ LPD)German text. You can take the confirmation of the theft report and all other necessary documents to the passport authority in order to have your passport reissued.
Advice
After reporting the theft to the local police (→ LPD)German text, citizens of countries other than Austria should visit their home country's representations (→ BMEIA) in order to request an emergency passport.
If your passport is stolen abroad
If you are abroad, you must first report the theft to the local police. On the basis of this report, the Austrian representation (→ BMEIA) (embassy, consulate) will issue an emergency passport for your return journey.
When you have returned to Austria, you must take the foreign theft report to the police in Austria in order to report the theft again. You can take the confirmation of the theft report from the Austrian police and all other necessary documents to the passport authority in order to have your passport reissued.
Advice
It is not possible to travel to the USA with an Austrian emergency passport without a visa under the Visa Waiver Program. It is only possible if a visa is obtained from the US representation. Bear in mind that you will need to book an appointment for an interview at the US representation, which costs around 146 Euro, and that it will take at least two working days to process your application.
Given the processing time for US visas, you may also want to consider applying for a 1-day express passport in Austria.
The aforementioned provisions also apply if the USA is not your final destination, but you are transiting through a US airport.
