L17 – basic training at a driving school

Applicants can already start basic training at a driving school (→ WKO) at the age of 15 years and six months. Applicants may only submit an application to carry out on-road training once they have completed the basic training.

Caution

In general, these rules also apply to EU citizens in Austria.

The pre-training and basic training involve both theory and practical lessons. The theory lessons comprise 32 sessions (candidates having already completed the basic course only need to attend 12 sessions). The practical lessons comprise 12 sessions (of 50 minutes each).

Once the applicant has completed a course of theory lessons at a driving school and has provided a valid medical certificate, they can take a theory test.

Their supervisor does not need to participate in the basic training.

In addition, applicants and their supervisors must attend one theory session with regard to on-road training.

Tip

Emergency life-saving training is usually organised by your driving school (→ WKO)German text with an external provider.
