Changing licence plate number
New
Since1 December 2023, a digital annual vignette can be re-registered once after the start of its validity without giving reasons, provided that the registration holder does not change.
The digital vignette is not linked to the vehicle, but to the licence plate number. In principle, a digital vignette can be re-registered to a different licence plate number once after the start of its validity period without giving reasons, provided the registration holder does not change.
In addition, it is always possible to re-register a digital annual vignette after the start of its validity in the following cases, provided the licence plate holder does not change:
- change of the place of residence of the holder of the registration certificate, if they are assigned a new licence plate number due to the resulting requirement to re-register their vehicle (e.g. when moving to a different administrative district)
- newly assigned licence plate number due to theft of the vehicle
- newly assigned licence plate number due to theft/loss of the vehicle number plates originally entered in the system
- newly assigned licence plate number due to write-off of the vehicle
- assignment of a personalised licence plate number
- newly assigned licence plate number after waiving a personalised licence plate number or expiration of a personalised licence plate number
- newly assigned licence plate number in accordance with section 50 (2) KFG due to delivery of a number plate that is no longer clearly legible
- assignment of a new licence plate as a result of the issuance of a licence plate panel pursuant to section 49 (4) (5) KFG for motor vehicles with purely electric drive or with hydrogen fuel cell drive (E licence plate number with green letters)
- in similar cases
This will result in an 18 Euro administration fee being charged by the ASFINAG for re-allocation. However, this fee will be reimbursed in the following cases:
- newly assigned licence plate number due to theft of the vehicle
- newly assigned licence plate number due to theft/loss of the number plates originally registered in the toll system
- newly assigned licence plate number due to write-off of the vehicle
- newly assigned licence plate number in accordance with section 50 (2) KFG due to the return of a license plate, which is no longer permanently legible
- assignment of a new licence plate as a result of the issuance of a licence plate panel pursuant to section 49 (4) (5) KFG for motor vehicles with purely electric drive or with hydrogen fuel cell drive (E licence plate number with green letters)
The digital vignette must be re-allocated to the new licence plate number before entering motorways and expressways with the new licence plate number.
It is possible to change the licence plate number to which the digital vignette is registered free of charge before the start of its validity period.
You will be required to create an account on the ASFINAG customer portal in order to make any changes to the registered licence plate number.
Caution
These rules apply to all persons participating in road traffic in Austria.
