Section toll for motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 t

General information

Caution

These rules apply to all persons participating in road traffic in Austria.

On particularly cost-intensive Alpine crossing of the Austrian motor- and expressway network, special tariffs (section tolls) apply to motor vehicles up to 3.5 t with a technically permissible maximum laden mass. These parts of the motorway and expressway network are subject to section toll:

A 9 Pyhrn motorway: between the Spital/Pyhrn junction and the Ardning (Bosruck Tunnel) junction, and the section between the St. Michael junction and the Übelbach (Gleinalm Tunnel) junction
A 10 Tauern motorway on the section between the Flachau junction and the Rennweg (Tauern-/Katschberg Tunnel) junction
A 11 Karawanken motorway on the section between the St. Jakob im Rosental junction and the state border in the Karawanken Tunnel
A 13 Brenner motorway
S 16 Arlberg express road on the section between the St. Anton am Arlberg junction and the Langen am Arlberg (Arlberg Tunnel) junction

Vignettes are not mandatory on those parts of road subject to a section toll.

Section tolls can be paid per trip or via a multi-trip card (exception for multiple trips: Karawanken Tunnel). A ticket for a single trip can be used within one year from the date of issue. Multi-trip cards allow for any number of trips on a specific section toll route within 365 days from when they become valid.

Advice

A transitional provision stipulates that vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of over 3.5 t, for which a maximum permissible weight (mpw) of up to and including 3.5 t was determined before 1 December 2023, are still subject to the section toll until 31 January 2029. However, if the determination of a maximum permissible gross vehicle weight up to and including 3.5 t is canceled at a later date, the vehicle in question will be subject to the mileage-based toll ("GO toll") from this date.

There are no specific deadlines.

Competent authority

Motorway and Express Road Financing Corporation (→ ASFINAG) – collection of the tolls and implementation of the operational tasks is carried out by the company ASFINAG Maut Service GmbH.

Procedure

Section toll passes (single route ticket or multi-trip card) can be purchased directly from the relevant toll gate either in cash, by credit card, with a fuel card, by debit car or online in the ASFINAG toll shop. The online purchase must be completed before the journey.
Furthermore, section toll passes can also be purchases at many ASFINAG sales outlets and at ASFINAG vending machines.

Drivers can then enter any open lane at the toll gate or – if a section toll ticket has already been purchased in advance – into the green marked lane (A 9). On the A 10, A 11, and S 16 for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 t it is prohibited to use the specially marked GO lane. Only on the A 13 at the toll station Schönberg it is allowed to use the open lane to the very right as well. A valid ticket for the licence plate number will be automatically recognised. In this case the barrier opens automatically.

When purchasing a digital section toll ticket, special attention should be paid to the correct entry/registration of the licence plate number of the vehicle. Motor vehicle drivers who use motor- or expressway sections subject to section toll with a vehicle whose licence plate has not been registered correctly commit an administrative offence.

The digital section toll multi-trip card can also be purchased on subscription. If you make a digital subscription, your digital section toll multi-trip card will renew automatically each year and the applicable amount will be charged until you cancel your subscription. Then the new multi-trip card will become valid as soon as the previous one expires.

If you already receive a free digital vignette for people with disabilities, you will also receive a free multi-trip card for people with disabilities for the section toll automatically. Otherwise, the provisions and requirements for receiving a free multi-trip card for people with disabilites, who do not receive a free vignette, are laid down in the tolling regulation (→ ASFINAG).

"FLEX Digital Section Toll" service

The "FLEX Digital Section Toll" is a free service provided by ASFINAG that allows you to pay the section toll without cash and without stopping at the toll gates. With the FLEX service, invoicing takes place automatically in retrospect.

It can be activated for every licence plate that is registered in the ASFINAG toll shop. Each time you pass a toll gate, the trip will be recorded under "My account". Tolls are charged to the driver's credit card (American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, VISA) or paid via SEPA direct debit. It is possible to activate additional vehicle licence plate numbers or change the stored payment details at any time.

Substitute toll and administrative penalties

The toll for the use of a part of the motorway and expressway network subject to section toll is deemed to have been paid only if a route-specific section toll ticket is registered for the licence plate number of the vehicle, or if a ticket is bought at the relevant toll booth.

Drivers who use parts of a road subject to section toll without paying the section toll in the prescribed manner will be asked by ASFINAG to pay a substitute toll. If this substitute toll is not fullypaid within the deadline, offenders will be liable to administrative penalties as set out in the Bundesstrassen-Mautgesetz 2002. These penalties range from 300 Euro to 3,000 Euro.
